Job Description Home Attendant 

Position Title- Home Attendant

Department - Human Resources

Reports To - Talent Manager

Receives feedback from - Regional Supervisor, HR Representative and Clinical Team

Employment Status- Variable hour/Non-exempt



  • Have satisfactorily completed a nursing education program preparing for registered nurse licensure or practical nurse licensure or;
  • Have satisfactorily completed a nurse aide education program approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing or;
  • Have certification as a nurse aide issued by the Virginia Board of Nursing or;
  • Be successfully enrolled in a nursing education program preparing for registered nurse or practical nurse licensure and have currently completed at least one nursing course that includes clinical experience involving direct client care or;
  • Have satisfactorily passed a competency evaluation program that meets the criteria of 42CFR$484.36(b). Home attendants of personal care services need only be evaluated on the tasks 42 CFR$484.36(b) as those tasks relate to the personal care services to be provided or;
  • Have satisfactorily completed training the "Personal Care Aide Training Curriculum" dated 2003, of the Department of Medical Assistant Services


  • provide, at least, two work-related references
  • Working cell phone with voice mail for ready access
  • Successful completion of Seniorcorp's Alzheimer's and Dementia/Hospice and Advanced Transfer Training


Summary of Job Responsibilities:

The Home Attendant Level 1 provides only those health related services/tasks within the established job description and the Plan of Care. The duties of the Home Attendant Level 1 will remain in compliance with state-specific regulations and agency policies and procedures.


Responsibilities and Duties:

Responsibilities of the Home Attendant Level 1 include, but are not limited to, the following:


Caregivers must comply with all applicable laws and regulations, and all Seniorcorp policies and procedures during the course and scope of their employment with Seniorcorp.


  • Adhering to client's rights
  • Maintaining client confidentiality and adhering to HIPPA regulations
  • Providing for and assisting with personal care needs, such as bathing, dressing, grooming, hair care, shaving, oral care, and perineal care
  • Cleaning and filing fingernails
  • Assisting with toileting using bedside commode, bedpan, and urinals
  • Assisting with ambulation including the use of walkers, canes, and wheelchairs as needed
  • Performing home management functions such as light housekeeping of areas of the residence that the client uses, laundry, bed-making and cleaning
  • Planning meals, shopping for groceries, preparing and serving food, feeding and clean-up
  • Responsible for referring to the client's individualized Plan of Care regarding reminding and assisting with client's normally self-administered medications
  • Reporting changes in the client's condition or family situation to RN Supervisor/Branch staff within 24 hours
  • Responding to and reporting emergency situations to RN Supervisor/Branch staff
  • Documenting services provided on the appropriate flow sheet
  • Accompanying client to schedule appointments
  • Participating in in-service programs
  • Submitting documentation within required time frames
  • Caring for intact skin to prevent skin breakdown
  • Assisting with transfers to assure client safety
  • Caring for Alzheimer's patients
  • Assisting with proper body alignment to prevent complications from immobility
  • Transporting clients or assisting with errands
  • Assisting with turning on oxygen concentrator only as directed by the client
  • Collecting specimens (urine, sputum, and stool)
  • Monitoring and recording client intake and output
  • Assisting with ROM or prescribed exercise program
  • Taking and recording vital signs
  • Providing ostomy care
  • Applying Ted hose
  • Assisting with deep breathing and coughing exercises
  • Assisting with external urinary drainage
  • Perform other duties as assigned consistent with the terms of this job description and related to client's independent living where the client cannot perform such duties due to the client's health or age limitations.


Additional Duties after Alzheimer's and Dementia/Hospice and Advanced Transfer Training:

  • Assisting with Medical lifts
  • Assist with advanced transfers to assure client safety
  • Caring for Alzheimer's clients in need of constant redirection
  • Caring for Dementia clients in need of constant redirection
  • Assisting with palliative care



LIVE-IN ADDENDUM Responsibilities when working in a Live-In Case:

The Caregiver performing services in a live-in case will be responsible for adhering to the following responsibilities in addition to those specifically outlined in the care plan.  The standards below constitute a normal live-in schedule.  It is the express responsibility of the Caregiver to report any deviation of this schedule to provide Seniorcorp adequate time to update the schedule and correct any payroll and billing information.  Otherwise, Seniorcorp will assume the normal schedule has been followed, and the Caregiver will be paid accordingly.


A Standard 24-Hour Live-In shift consists of the following:


  • Sixteen (16) paid hours
  • 8 hours of sleep time (with 5 hours uninterrupted)
  • Caregiver clocks in 7am and clock out at 11pm daily


The Live-In Caregiver must report to Seniorcorp on a daily basis any deviation of the standard 24-hour schedule, including but not limited to the eight (8) hours of sleep time.  Note:  Sleep time is not restricted to the traditional 11:00pm to 7:00am "overnight" shift.  Live-in Caregivers may, depending on their client's routine and the care plan, sleep at times outside the 11:00pm to 7:00am.  Whatever sleep schedule works best for the Caregiver and his / her client, the Caregiver must be allowed 8 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period.  5 of those sleep hours must be uninterrupted.


The Caregiver should use Telephony, if the situation allows, to report sleep interruptions where the Caregiver was awoken by the client to provide care or assistance.   If unable to use telephony, the Caregiver must call Seniorcorp the following morning to report any sleep interruptions to provide client care.  This time will count as additional time worked, for which the Caregiver will be paid and the client will be billed.  Note:  Should the Caregiver not receive 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep (due to client care needs), the caregiver must be paid for all 8 hours of sleep time during that 24-hour period, AND, the client will be billed for all 8 hours of that sleep time interruption.


All Live-In Caregivers will receive a weekly email reminder to report any deviations from their normal 24-hour schedules in the most recent week worked.  If no deviations are reported, the caregiver and Seniorcorp agree that the work week was as scheduled and will be paid as such.


Duties Do Not Include:

  • Providing wound care including dressing changes
  • Inserting Foley catheters
  • Administering invasive procedures including cutting toe nails, inserting suppositories, tube feeding, injections, nor suctioning (deeper than mouth)
  • Blood glucose testing
  • Performing heavy housekeeping (ex. Windows, washing walls, moving heavy furniture)
  • Babysitting
  • Recommending services or offering medical advice
  • Providing personal phone numbers to client/families or contacting them unless approved by Seniorcorp management or RN supervisor
  • Accepting private employment from the client or other financially responsible person



Education Requirements Minimum GED, high school diploma or equivalent years of experience


Skill Requirements Basic computer skills, must be able to work in a home with pets


Physical Requirements Must be able to perform the essential job duties with or without reasonable accommodation as outlined in orientation and the post offer pre-employment physical for job-related duties.
